Freedom Hall, an after-school mentoring program on the campus of Martin Luther King, Jr., Technology Academy, is completing its third year of serving urban fatherless young men in North Sacramento. It operates 3 days a week working in a team-based environment to develop character growth, improve academic performance, and enhance life skills through long term mentoring from 6th grade through high school graduation. STS exposes urban fatherless young men to area businesses and points of interest they have never been to. Academic challenges are held three times during the school year; the winning teams of young men have gone to catch 24” mackinaw in Lake Tahoe, hiked in the Sierras, camped where they experienced snow for the first time, visited a marine college campus and tour their ocean ship, along with many other trips.

After seeing their sons in Freedom Hall, mothers report positive character changes in their son's behavior at home, and academic improvement at school.

Beginning in the April 2010, Freedom Hall Lite will begin on three elementary schools.  Here two staff mentors will be matched with six to nine fatherless young boys. They will meet together for one hour per week with fatherless young men in the 6th grade on each campus.

Level Up is a five week summer program on the campus of MLK for urban fatherless young men who had been involved in Freedom Hall during the school year. Its objective is to keep our young men OFF the streets during the summer and continue the momentum built during the academic school year. Staff and volunteers are providing about 50 urban fatherless young men with a learning environment that is real, relevant and fun. An intense 50 hours per week, Level Up continues math and reading support, incorporates art and team building activities, and culminates with a camp and the Annual Del Paso Heights Cardboard Boat Regatta. Level Up also includes: Business tours and fun trips, game and movie night, life skills and character development.

“It is our hope that every young man’s life will be changed as a result of participating in Level Up, that they will experience growth in their character and have a fun experience.” — Bill Coibion, Founder
